What, the UN bike conspiracy isn’t a good donor appeal?

Friday, August 27th, 2010

The GOP Civil War in Colorado produced one of the most unappealing candidates in the country. And now Tea Partier/Tin Foil hat standard-bearer Dan Maes is pleading for cash and “teetering on the brink.” POLITICO uncovers some priceless emails exchanged in Colorado over Maes’ dire straits.

Republicans worry over Maes cash dearth

Colorado gubernatorial nominee Dan Maes has already overcome a significant cash dearth to win once this election cycle, but now Republican leaders are warning that without a fast injection of cash, his campaign might be doomed. In a recent e-mail to grassroots Republicans forwarded to POLITICO, the president of Denver’s Coalition for a Conservative Majority said Maes’s campaign was teetering on the brink due to anemic cash flow.

“Dick Wadhams informed us that the Maes campaign is on the verge of collapse due to lack of campaign funding. If you are a Dan Maes supporter, be aware that his campaign desperately needs donations even more than it needs volunteers to work,” wrote coalition president Jack Ott, referencing comments made by state party chair Dick Wadhams at recent meeting.

In a separate e-mail to a conservative listserv, Colorado 9-12 Project leader Lu Busse wrote that Maes “in particular needs money,” and suggested that a big cash infusion from grassroots members could help spur rank-and-file establishment Republicans and “big money” players to get off the sidelines.

Yet another Tea Party candidate wins

Monday, May 24th, 2010

In another sign that the Tea Party fight is crippling the GOP, businessman and political novice Dan Maes outperformed establishment pick Scott McInnis, a former Congressman, in weekend party balloting in Colorado. John Hickenlooper, the mayor of Denver, cruised to victory in the Democratic contest.

Surprise: Maes Leads GOP Governor Pack

The Republican front-runner to win the party’s nomination in the Colorado governor race and the state’s Democratic senator were dealt setbacks in party assemblies on Saturday.

Republicans voted to place businessman Dan Maes ahead of former congressman Scott McInnis on the August primary ballot for governor, while Democratic challenger Andrew Romanoff will get top billing on the ballot over incumbent Sen. Michael Bennet after winning the most votes at the state Democratic assembly.

Maes, who has never held elected office, received a handful of votes more than McInnis. He criticized his own party as he addressed Republican activists.

PPP: Hickenlooper starts with double-digit lead

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

New polling shows Mayor John Hickenlooper with an 11-point lead over Congressman Scott McInnis, thanks to his strong crossover appeal and a 14-point lead among Independents. The numbers show how Hickenlooper’s message is clearly resonating with Independents and Republicans, especially since he has already reached the 50 percent threshold.

Hickenlooper starts out ahead

John Hickenlooper is bucking the trends that have Democrats trailing right now in most of the major races across the country, and that makes him the early favorite to be Colorado’s next Governor.

Hickenlooper leads Scott McInnis 50-39. He’s up 48-34 with independents, making this only the third race we’ve polled since November where the Democratic candidate had a lead with that group. And he also has Democratic voters more unified around him (85%) than Republican voters are around McInnis (77%). In the vast majority of races we’ve looked at recently GOP candidates are doing a better job of keeping their party lined up behind them than Democrats are.

There’s absolutely no doubt Democrats are better off with Hickenlooper in the race than they would have been if Bill Ritter had tried for reelection. While Hickenlooper’s favorability spread is a positive 51/27, Ritter’s approval rating continues to be in negative territory as it has been for the last year at 38/50. That’s a 36 point net improvement for Democrats by swapping Ritter for Hickenlooper and given that it’s no wonder the party’s in so much better shape now.

Scott McInnis’ Bad Week Gets Worse

DGA Welcomes Hickenlooper to Governors Race

Washington, D.C. – “Mayor Hickenlooper’s fresh brand of leadership has broad statewide appeal – as a chief executive, he has demonstrated that he can apply the best of his business background to government, manage taxpayer money wisely and create good jobs,” said Nathan Daschle, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association. “John Hickenlooper’s unflagging optimism, innovative ideas and clear vision make him a strong choice to be Colorado’s next governor.”

Republican candidate Scott McInnis, who spent a dozen years in D.C. as a Member of Congress and then became a lobbyist, will now have to explain to Colorado voters why he’s a better choice to lead the state than a seasoned business leader who has created jobs and revitalized an economy.

“We’ll stack up Mayor Hickenlooper’s record of creating jobs against Scott McInnis’ years rubberstamping George W. Bush any day,” Daschle said. “While John Hickenlooper has spent the last several years fighting to create jobs, lawyer/lobbyist Scott McInnis spent this time fighting for his special interest clients.”
