RedGovWatch: Kinder Mum on Disturbing Allegations

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

A week after the Riverfront Times posted a picture of Missouri LG (and presumptive Republican candidate for Governor) Peter Kinder posing with a former Penthouse Pet at a bar known for its “pantless parties,” Kinder and his camp remain silent, refusing to clear up any confusion about Kinder’s alleged frequenting of the bar.

In the ensuing days, the story has gotten worse with new allegations. But Kinder refuses to offer any explanation for his behavior.

Here’s what local and national media are reporting on the incident:

Penthouse Pet Dishes on Peter Kinder: “He Was One of My Best Customers” – Sarah Fenske, Riverfront Times

Tammy Chapman, the former Penthouse Pet photographed earlier this year with Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder at a south-city bar known for its “pantsless parties,” says she never had an affair with the politician — but it wasn’t for lack of trying on his part. … Still, when he saw her at Verlin’s Bar and Grill last winter, after they hadn’t seen each other in years, she says that Kinder — who is now widely believed to be mounting a challenge to incumbent Governor Jay Nixon, a Democrat — suggested she move into his Brentwood condo.

And a quick break in the action from Wisconsin to bring you the latest in what’s becoming the laughingstock that is the Missouri governor’s race. The Penthouse Pet pictured with Kinder at a pantless bar is talking, telling the Riverfront Times Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder pursued her so aggressively when he was a legislator years ago that she had to cut off all contact.

Republican Lt. Governor Peter Kinder may be looking at a major set-back in his drive to be governor. Published reports in The Riverfront Times and Politico linked Kinder with a former Penthouse Pet…Chapman said Kinder would show up at the club every Monday night, bring her cookies and brownies and she would give him private “dances.”

You’ve probably already read about Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder’s visit to a bar famous for its nightly “pantless parties,” and you’ve also probably seen the picture at right. But now, the woman in the photo, Tammy Chapman, has come forward to talk to the Riverfront Times about her past history with Kinder…I don’t have much more to add, except to say that if Chapman’s story is true—and it certainly sounds like it’s in keeping with everything we know about Kinder’s character—I’m not sure how his already-flailing campaign is supposed to survive the next year.

From the Chair’s Desk: Unlike GOP, Democrats Will Focus on Jobs

Friday, August 5th, 2011

I wanted to share this recent op-ed by my friend, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

The op-ed is timely as we seek to retire the Bush deficit while keeping the focus on creating jobs in the states.

Hard-working moms and dads across America want a balanced approach to strengthen our economy and create jobs. People understand that to create jobs, a modern economy requires modern investments. The vast majority of Americans believe our country’s future—our children’s future—is worth the effort and worth the investment.

Let me know what you think.

Jobs., Opportunity., Now,

Pelosi: Unlike GOP, Democrats will focus on jobs

By Nancy Pelosi

The American people have made it clear: Our nation’s top priority is job creation. No recovery can take place until we address kitchen table concerns of America’s families: having a steady paycheck, being able to make ends meet, and helping our small businesses and entrepreneurs attract customers, grow, and hire.

This week, we’ve crossed the bridge from an obsession with the national debt and a real risk of default to a discussion of job creation. As the legendary Willie Nelson recently said: Americans are “much more worried about ceilings over their heads these days than they are about the debt ceiling.” He’s right, and Democrats know that nothing is more critical to Americans’ economic security than good-paying jobs.

In Congress, our work must be putting people back to work. To meet that charge, Democrats have proposed our “Make It In America” initiative, led by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer. It presents ideas backed by both parties: to rebuild our roads, bridges, and rail lines; to invest in innovation, broadband, clean energy, and new technologies to create the jobs of tomorrow for our businesses and workers.

Make It In America is a manufacturing strategy designed to create jobs and keep America No. 1, and it will fulfill President Obama’s goal to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world. This is not a partisan agenda or cause; it is an American priority.

Take infrastructure, for example: Business and labor agree with the need to rebuild America by bringing the public and private sectors together. As the presidents of the Chamber of Commerce and the AFL-CIO said in a joint statement in January, infrastructure “projects not only create jobs and demand for businesses, they are an investment in building the modern infrastructure our country needs to compete in a global economy.” One way to fund these projects, which has bipartisan support, is through an infrastructure bank.

Consider fairness in our trade relationships: In the last Congress, an overwhelming, bipartisan majority in the House passed legislation to demand China stop manipulating its currency and start playing fair in global trade — an action that could create more than one million American jobs and enhance our economic and national security. On behalf of our workers, our entrepreneurs, and our small businesses, we can, and must, pass this legislation again.

RedGovWatch: High Planes, Low Poll Numbers

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

What is it with Republicans and misusing state aircraft, touting fake surpluses, and generating jaw-droppingly low approval ratings? As Yogi Berra once said, “It’s déjà vu all over again.”

In the wake of Chris Christie’s infamous copter-gate episode, it is now clear that jet-setting governors John Kasich of Ohio and Bob McDonnell of Virginia may have both wasted thousands of taxpayer dollars aboard state planes. McDonnell was also caught red-handed trying to postpone pension payments to tout an artificial state surplus.

Down in Kentucky, voters are just plain fed up with Kentucky GOP gubernatorial candidate David Williams, who is down by a colossal 24 points in the latest poll.

While Republicans call for a “shared sacrifice,” it looks like they’re only willing to give up their credibility.

Here’s the rundown:

Ohio

Only weeks after Chris Christie’s helicopter debacle, John Kasich has been caught red-handed “using state planes to excess.” In just six months, the governor took 38 trips on the state planes, racking up more than $53,000 in bills for Ohio taxpayers.

This news comes after Kasich’s banning of collective bargaining for public employees and devastating cuts to education – so-called “shared sacrifices” that the governor himself is avoiding.

Kasich even had the audacity to criticize the previous governor during the last election for using the state plane. Now he’s using them four times more often, and his “raging hypocrisy” is glaringly clear.

Ohioans deserve a governor who is willing to stick to his word – and the ground.

Virginia

Today The Washington Post reported that Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has used the taxpayer-funded state plane for personal events, attending political events with Tea Party groups, NASCAR races, and a festival. As George Mason political scientist Mark Rozell put it, “At this time, when people are in a rage about government spending, I would imagine they would be more cautious.”

The revelations about McDonnell’s jet-setting come in the same week that The Washington Post editorial board painted a disturbing picture of Bob McDonnell’s supposed state surplus in Virginia: “Imagine a business that declares a profit two years running but achieves it by withholding payments owed to an important supplier,” the paper wrote.

The Virginia governor has done just that by postponing $620 million in payments to the state pension system, which covers 600,000 teachers. McDonnell declared the withheld funds would be repaid “starting in 2013 — conveniently, the year his gubernatorial term ends.”

McDonnell is clearly more concerned with maintaining his political image than he is with leveling with Virginians.

Kentucky

Maybe David Williams was right to vociferously contest June’s poll showing him 21 points behind Steve Beshear: a recent SurveyUSA poll shows that he’s actually down 24 points.

Why is the Republican Senate President experiencing such devastating numbers? The poll makes it clear: Kentucky voters simply don’t like him or his extremist policies.

With an approval rating of 21%, Williams is losing to Beshear in every geographic area, and the former is barely winning among members of his own party—just 58 percent.

Across the country, Republicans like Williams are now facing the consequences of their radical ideology and rampant hypocrisy.
